This is the Kaparot Ceremony during which a chicken is held above the gentleman's head while he makes a prayer. Followers of this tradition believe that it help them receive a fortuitous seal in the Book of Life for the coming year.
It's an unusual tradition, at least in my mind. But, one thing I appreciate about blogging is the amount of wonderful cultural information we receive from one another. When I enlarged the photo I was struck by how weirdly similar the chicken's feet looked to human hands.
